Temp Agency Cover Letter With No Experience: The 2026 Template That Gets You Placed

Applying through a staffing agency with no work history throws most candidates off, and for good reason: the standard cover letter taught at school simply does not work here. You are not writing to the company where you will actually work. You are writing to an agency that will place you with its clients. Until that clicks, the application misses the mark.

Why a staffing agency letter is its own thing

A recruitment consultant juggles dozens of open roles at once, many of which need filling within 48 hours. They are not looking for someone passionate about a brand; they are looking for someone they can place quickly and safely. Their criteria are concrete — availability, travel radius, shifts you will accept, valid certifications, reliability.

Which means lines like "your organisation has a reputation for excellence" are dead weight. They occupy space that should be carrying your actual availability. Without experience, your strongest argument is not your background — it is how immediately placeable you are. Our application templates give you a clean base to adapt sector by sector.

The four-paragraph structure

1. An opening that says everything in two lines. Target role, availability, travel radius. For example: "Available to start immediately, I'd like to register with your agency for warehouse and order-picking assignments across the Leeds area, including early and night shifts." The consultant already knows whether they can place you.

2. What you can actually do, employment history or not. Summer work, waiting tables, helping in a family business, volunteering, house moves, occasional manual work — all of it counts. Translate it into usable skills: manual handling, following safety procedures, teamwork, sustained pace. Running your draft through a resume analyzer helps surface the skills you are underselling.

3. Your paperwork advantages. This is the paragraph almost nobody writes, and it is the one that lands placements. Driving licence and your own vehicle, forklift certification, OSHA 10 or CSCS card, right-to-work documents ready, DBS check completed, willing to work weekends, available for long-term assignments. Each line removes an obstacle to placing you.

4. A short, active close. Offer to come in rather than "I look forward to hearing from you." A sentence like "I can come into the branch this week with my documents" turns a file into an appointment.

Tailoring the letter to each posting

Agencies publish unusually detailed adverts: shift patterns, assignment length, required certifications are all spelled out. Reusing their exact vocabulary lifts your chances considerably, especially since the large staffing networks screen applications with software before anyone reads them. The job match analyzer compares your application against the advert and flags missing keywords, while the ATS resume checker confirms your document stays readable to those filters.

Attach a CV that matches the letter, too. The two documents are read together, and a contradiction about dates or travel radius is enough to sink the application. An online resume builder lets you spin up a version per sector in minutes.

Mistakes that cost assignments

  • Being vague about availability. "As soon as possible" means nothing — give a date.
  • Omitting your travel radius. In temp work, geography decides half of all placements.
  • Sending one identical letter to every agency. Different agencies hold very different client books.
  • Running past one page. Nobody at a branch reads a second page.
  • Never following up. A call five days later puts your name back on top of the pile.

After you send it

Register with three to five agencies in the same area at once — that is the norm in this sector, not disloyalty. Then prepare for the registration interview, usually short but decisive, with the interview preparation tool, and check going rates in your sector using the salary calculator before you discuss your hourly rate. More guides on temp work and early applications are collected on the career blog. A first assignment handled well very often leads to a second, and then to a permanent contract.
